The leading sportsman and property developer from Newcastle has been charged with conspiring to pervert the course of justice over the conduct of the Windies fast bowler Chris Gayle in last week’s Test against Pakistan.
In April, Gayle, who has been awarded three-match ban for his role in the infamous ‘sledging’ incident during the second Test against India, also drew disciplinary action when he was charged with breaching Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, relating to ‘conduct that is prejudicial or contrary to the spirit of the game’.
The ban was imposed for the first of his four major transgressions against the spirit of the game, and Gayle's imposed suspension was for a period of three matches.
The ICC Code of Conduct and Ethics has provisions for two-year bans for the third and fourth offences. In his case, however, it was felt that a two-year ban was insufficient, with the sanction being increased to three years.
The charges relate to the events that took place on the fourth day of the Test against Pakistan, when Gayle dismissed both Azhar Ali and Imam-ul-Haq, and was later involved in a confrontation with Kevin O’Brien.
Gayle was given a second charge of breaching Article 2.1.2 of the Code of Conduct, relating to ‘a deliberate act which is contrary to the spirit of the game’.
